Scientific Director, Center for Transplant System Excellence
Karl J. McCleary, Ph.D., M.P.H., was promoted to Scientific Director for UNOS' Center for Transplant System Excellence in 2010. McCleary joined UNOS in 2007 as director of policy, membership and regional administration, and served as deputy project director for the OPTN contract. Prior to joining UNOS, McCleary served as principal investigator, co-investigator or consultant on major funded research projects from federal, state and private foundations. He also has held primary appointments on the faculties of University of Missouri, Loma Linda University and Pennsylvania State University. His interests and experiences have led him to conduct research and consult in the areas of organ donation, public health, health systems management, performance and organizational change. He brings 15 years of experience in examining health systems and practice. McCleary holds an affiliate faculty appointment in the Department of Social and Behavioral Health at Virginia Commonwealth University's School of Medicine.
McCleary earned a doctor of philosophy in administration-health services from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, a master of public health in health policy and management from Emory University in Atlanta, and a bachelor of science in biology from Oakwood University.
