Second Edition of UNOS Organ Procurement Book Published
Richmond, VA -- The United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) has published the second edition of UNOS Organ Procurement, Preservation and Distribution in Transplantation. The book provides professionals involved in the field of transplantation with a convenient reference source for comprehensive, reliable, and current information on practices and issues involving organ and tissue procurement, preservation and distribution.
Written by experts in transplantation, the latest edition contains information on subjects not included in the previous edition, which was published in 1991. New chapters address the latest issues and trends in organ and tissue procurement and distribution, including the medical examiner's role in organ donation, small bowel donation, non-heart beating donors, seroologic testing, present alternatives to the cadaveric organ shortage, and processing and sharing of bone, tissue and aortic valve allografts.
Diagrams of surgical procedures and explanations of transplant terminology in every chapter instruct medical professionals in emergency rooms, intensive care units and operating rooms about cadaver donation evaluation and management, what to expect when a procurement team arrives at the hospital and how to support the needs of donor families.
The book also serves as a reference source for transplant professionals in other countries who wish to compare procedures, practices and issues used in the United States to those used in their own countries.
UNOS Organ Procurement, Preservation and Distribution in Transplantation was edited by Michael G. Phillips, B.H.S., PA-C, director of the Alabama Organ Center and an instructor in the department of surgery at University of Alabama School of Medicine. Mr. Phillips was also editor of the first edition of this book as well as editor of the UNOS Organ Procurement Coordinator's Handbook. Arnold G. Diethelm, M.D., a leading authority in kidney transplantation and director of the kidney transplant program at University of Alabama hospital, served as consulting editor.
