New Program Lets Recipients, Donor Families Honor Special Person or Occasion
On the anniversary of his death each year, Rosalie Saxon will remember her husband, Arnie, with a lasting gift that will benefit many. She will do this through a dedicated contribution to the National Transplantation Resources Center (NTRC) Tributes Program. This year Rosalie chose a book on transplantation from the patient perspective. Inside the main cover is a nameplate with a memorial message. Rosalie's pledge made her the first Tributes contributor. Rosalie is a volunteer in the NTRC, picking up where her beloved husband left off. After recovering from a kidney transplant in 1995, Arnie volunteered in the NTRC once a week, on Tuesdays, for about two and a half years. Rosalie wanted to make the first "Tribute" because Arnie felt that volunteering with the National Transplant Resource Center at UNOS was a meaningful way to say thank you for the miraculous gift he had received and to recognize the network that helped make it possible. The Tributes Program was conceptualized by the UNOS NTRC Medical Librarian Lorraine Sitler. Lorraine has received periodic calls from people wanting to donate in order to further transplantation research. Contributing to the Tributes Program allows the giver to add to the base of scientific knowledge and recorded history available to the US transplant community through the NTRC. Wanting to help transplantation move forward and make more transplants possible, Rosalie decided to choose a title each year from the Tributes Program wish list because, "Books are a forever thing - something that people will read and, perhaps, use to save lives. How much more precious could a gift be?" Rosalie's pledge made her the first Tributes contributor. Rosalie is a volunteer in the NTRC, picking up where her beloved husband left off. When you honor someone special or highlight a memorable event or achievement by contributing to the NTRC Tributes Program, an acknowledgment of your gift will be sent to the honoree or the honoree's family, or to whomever you designate, as well as to you directly. One time contributions are welcome. Books and videocassettes purchased through this program will feature a bookplate with the name of the honoree or description of the special occasion and the reason for the tribute. If financial support of a journal subscription is preferred, the bookplate can be inserted in a transparent cover that holds the first issue of the subscription. If support of electronic services is your preferred means of tribute, your gift will be acknowledged on our web site. The NTRC librarian is responsible for the selection of materials purchased through "Tributes." Highly desirable additions to the collection are noted on a wish list. Contributors may designate their gift to cover the costs of a specific book, video, or journal title on the list, or indicate an NTRC service that they would like to support. For more information about this program, the wish list or the contribution form, please call 804-330-8546 or send an e-mail message to librarian@unos.org . |
