Patient Web Site Adds New Information About Pregnancy After Transplant

In its continuing effort to make information readily available to transplant candidates, recipients and their families, the Transplant Living Web site  has recently added a new section, Pregnancy after Transplant.

Since 1963, when the first woman to become pregnant after transplant was reported, numerous successful pregnancies have occurred in many types of transplant recipients.

In addition to information on fertility, the section contains summaries on precautions, labor and delivery, breastfeeding, and risks, including those of hypertension, rejection, infection and risks to the baby. Those considering pregnancy should first consult their obstetrician and transplant team.

Included on the site is a description and link to the National Transplantation Pregnancy Registry (NTPR), established in 1991 to study the outcomes of pregnancies in transplant recipients in North America. Included are not only female recipients who have been pregnant but also males who have fathered children after transplant. Analyses on the NTPR include follow-up of recipients' graft status and their offspring as well as the potential effects of the newer immunosuppressive regimens.
