Meet the Transplant Living Story of Hope Contest Winner

Transplant Living received more than 20,000 votes during the month of April to decide the site’s favorite story from a transplant recipient. The story with the most votes was Kathryn Smith, a multi-organ recipient from Miami, FL. Kathryn became suddenly and critically ill while a junior in high school, and would eventually need two liver transplants before undergoing a multivisceral transplant at the age of 20. She is also one of the longest living survivors of this rare procedure. In 2011, there were 578 multi-organ transplants in the U.S. Learn more now >

Dr. Smith, now completing her final year of residency, obtained her medical doctor degree in 2009. "I hope that I can be the doctor who will make a difference in the lives of my own patients, just like my doctors did for me."

UNOS' Transplant Living Web site provides information, resources and support about the transplant process. Thanks to inspiring stories like Kathryn's, patients benefit from support, insight and encouragement from those who have traveled this path before them. Kathryn agrees, "It is awesome to see a Web site site like this that provides education and support to patients and families going through transplant."
