In Memoriam: David Hull, M.D.

UNOS is saddened by the recent passing of Dr. David Hull, Director Emeritus of the transplant program at Hartford Hospital in Connecticut.

At the time of his death, Dr. Hull was Associate Councillor of UNOS Region 1 and a candidate for election as Region 1 Representative to the OPTN/UNOS Board of Directors. He was a current member of the OPTN/UNOS Membership and Professional Standards Committee. He also served multiple past terms on the OPTN/UNOS Organ Availability and Ad Hoc Donation Committees. UNOS staff members who worked with him remember him for his passion about transplantation, his deep regard for his patients and his willingness to always do for others before he did for himself.

He was called “the face, voice and hands of the Hartford Hospital Transplant Program for more than two decades” in a statement issued by the hospital. He joined its surgical staff in 1987 and became director of clinical transplantation in 1998. He also served as professor of surgery at the University of Connecticut medical school and as medical director of LifeChoice Donor Services, the Hartford-based organ procurement organization. He authored more than 70 medical publications and abstracts and volunteered his time and expertise for organizations including the American Liver Foundation and the National Kidney Foundation.

Diagnosed with lymphoma in 2008, he persevered through the debilitating effects of the disease. He underwent treatment including chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant, resuming his career as soon as his condition permitted. His legacies of service, teaching and commitment will be long remembered by his patients and colleagues.
