Meet the Story of Hope Contest Winners

Transplant Living received more than 9,000 votes during the month of April to decide the site’s favorite story from a living donor. The story with the most votes was William, “Willie” Richardson, a living donor from Mercer Island, Washington. In 2011, Willie donated his kidney to his nephew, Jack. Earlier that year, Jack broke his wrist and visited his doctor to have it treated. A routine blood test found that Jack’s kidneys were failing. He hadn’t started to show symptoms, but the doctor said that within six month Jack would start to have problems. Jack needed a new kidney. Because Jack was adopted from Guatemala, he wasn’t able to look for a blood-related donor. Luckily, his uncle Willie was a match. Learn more now >

Not only have the two recovered completely, both have begun running with Team Transplant, an exercise program promoting fitness and organ donor awareness.
