The United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) appreciates the opportunity to comment on amendments to the Final Rule for operation of the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN), published in the October 20, 1999, issue of the Federal Register (64 Fed. Reg. 56649 et seq.).
01/22/1999 Thoracic Policy 3.7 Implemented January 20, 1999, Go To Policy Notice And Justification Forms
 
Modifications to UNOS Policy 3.7 and new UNOS Heart Status 1A and Status 1B Justification Forms will be implemented at 12:00 p.m., Eastern time, on January 20, 1999. The UNOS Board of Directors approved changes to UNOS Policy 3.7 on June 25, 1998. The major new features of this amended policy include:
08/11/1998 UNOS Policy 3.6 Modifications as approved by the UNOS Board of Directors on June 25, 1998
 
The following modifications to UNOS Policy 3.6, in addition to modified Liver Status 1, 2A and 2B Justification Forms, will be effective August 19, 1998. As approved by the UNOS Board of Directors on June 25, 1998, the modifications to Policy 3.6 include:

Non-heart-beating donors (individuals whose deaths are determined by cessation of heart and respiratory function rather than loss of whole brain function) could potentially be of major importance in reducing the gap between the demand for and available supply of organs for transplantation.
