OPTN/UNOS Board Places Indiana Donor Network on Probation

St. Louis – At its meeting today, the OPTN Board of Directors placed Indiana Donor Network on probation. Indiana Donor Network is the organ procurement organization (OPO) coordinating organ donation in 85 of Indiana’s 92 counties.

As established in the OPTN bylaws, probation is a public designation of an OPTN member that is executing a corrective action plan for noncompliance with OPTN policies or bylaws, or a serious lapse in patient safety or quality of care. [Link to Member Actions page on OPTN site]

Summary of events

A routine site survey of records at the organization identified concerns with completeness of documentation in donor charts and adherence to its established quality processes.

The OPTN Membership and Professional Standards Committee (MPSC) interviewed representatives of the institution on October 27, 2016. While Indiana Donor Network demonstrated a strong commitment to service and reacted quickly with proposed quality improvement measures, the MPSC ultimately concluded that the organization requires additional close monitoring as it continues to implement changes to address the identified issues.

Indiana Donor Network waived its right to a hearing with the MPSC. The MPSC subsequently recommended that the organization be placed on probation, an action approved by the OPTN Board of Directors.

The Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN) is operated under contract with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration, Division of Transplantation, by United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS). The OPTN brings together medical professionals, transplant recipients and donor families to develop national organ transplantation policy.
